On Saturday, The Hollander Women’s Squad turned out for the Chiropractic Partners Criterium on Saturday with a solid performance in the Women’s Open field.

Sunday was the Team race in Sussex.  Sunshine, wind and warm (ok, hot) temps made for a beautiful day.   We ended up with 300 individual racers and 350 race entries which is more than any WCA race so far this year.  Both racers and race officials were complimentary on the great course and a well organized race.  The Orange Blur also turned out in force for a strong presence in the day.

Corey Dempski,  Jim Broennimann, Rich Protaciewicz and Pat Callahan took part in the Masters 1/2/3 race.

Steve Smith, Jim, Pat and Steve Roeder mixed it up in the Masters 3/4

Tim Theobald in the Masters 4/5

Nate Klump  4/5

Angela Theriault, Jessica Helmlinger and Sacha Horn in the Women’s Open

Wheels on Willy – Great Day for a Race!

Posted in Ride Reports on May 19th, 2010 by cafehollander

Sunday’s 23rd Annual Dave Kagy Memorial Wheels on Willy event put on by The Brazen Dropouts Cycling Club and Cronometro Bike Shop was nothing short of brilliant. The race went back in time, running the original course through the neighborhoods around Williamson Street. The feel is similar to Downer Ave., there is a lot of history, store fronts and folks hanging out watching some good ole bike racing.

The Hollander RDC Masters showed up in full force for the 55 minute crit. The pace was FAST. In attendance were Mike Buechel (fresh from the south) Dean Gore (RDC Rookie) , Richard Protasiewicz, John Harper (RDC Rookie), Ben Lund (RDC Rookie), David Jablonowski, Jim Broennimann and Mike McCanna (RDC Rookie).

After the 55 minute bout, Mike Buechel took RDC to podium finish securing 3rd in the field sprint, Buechel looks very strong this year. Also, showing his presence, was Dean Gore who rode hard to finish 16th.

In the womens racing action Jessica Helmlinger put in a stellar effort maintaining her second overall placement in the WCA points.

It was an awesome day of racing see ya’ll next weekend!! For our Sussex Race!

Muskego Park Race

Posted in Ride Reports on May 9th, 2010 by cafehollander

This weekend the Hollander Orange was out at the Matt Wittig Memorial Race in Muskego put on by the Hampshire Cycle Club. The weather was challenging to say the least. Throughout the day racers were put to the test in sunny, windy, raining, and hailing weather. The circuit course of Muskego park however, suited the different facets of the weather. The course ran counter clockwise. The Hampshire Club did a great job running some awesome racing.

Continuing her rock solid season, Jessica Helmlinger took 3rd and sits 2nd overall in the WCA points series.

Also on hand in the Masters 1-2-3’s , Corey Dempski and Jim Broennimann both sporting the Gary Fisher Cronus race bikes. Rich Protasiewicz and Mike McKenna. All finished strong.

Next week: Wheels on Willy May 16th

GDVC #2

Posted in Ride Reports on April 19th, 2010 by atheriault

This weekend Nathan,  Ben and Jessica hit Madtown for GDVC #2

Nate took an impressive 3rd in the Mens 4s race.

Jessica scored a WIN in the Women’s open.  Her race report follows:

The 2010 racing season has started out pretty well for me.  I kicked off the season with the second Kenosha Training Crit at the end of March.  I lined up with about 10 other girls including a bunch of IsCorp girls and Sam Schneider of Team Tibco.  I decided right away that wherever Sam was, I was going to be there too.  Iscorp launched a few attacks but no one was really responding.  Then about half way into the race, Sam made her move and I was right on her wheel.  We split the already small field into a couple groups.  Sam and I, along with 2 iscorp girls ended up lapping the rest of the field and it came down to a field sprint.  I was able to finish 3rd against some strong competition.  Not a bad first race of the season!

The next weekend, I went down to South Beloit for the Spring Super Criterium put on by Burnham Racing.  I did the race last year and it was fun and well organized.  We had a much bigger field for the woman’s open this time, but no big names.  The race started and no one wanted to do any work.  I sat on the front A LOT, but we were also going painfully slow most of the time just trying to get someone else to do some work.  We were lucky enough to have a couple primes in our race to keep things interesting, and I took both of them.  The last lap came and I was sitting a little farther back in the field than I would have liked.  We came around the last corner and the sprint started- there were still a lot of girls in front of me! As the line got closer, I came up on and passed a bunch of them and I realized there were only a couple girls left to pass so I found all the energy left in my body to sprint as hard as I could and I finished second.

I didn’t want to get too excited about my podium finishes until WCA started- there are some very strong girls in the woman’s open races in Wisconsin!  Last weekend I did the first GDCV race and was thrilled to have my teammates Angie and Sacha there with me.  It was a hard race but we all did very well, and my pack handling skills have improved so much from last year, that I really couldn’t be upset with myself that I didn’t place as high as I would have liked.  I had another mediocre finish at Menomenee Park on Saturday- I was feeling okay, just didn’t have good postioning coming into the field sprint.  Feeling a little discouraged, I went into Sunday’s GDVC #2 race feeling unsure how things would go.  I did the men’s cat. 4 race as a warm up early in the day and was feeling really good, legs and lungs were feeling great! Now just to maintain those feelings until the women’s open race, the last race of the day! Lining up, we had a decent sized field with some very strong riders- Kristen Wentworth, Anne Meyer, and Rachel Roessingh to name a few.  As soon as the race started, I made a decision that no one was getting off the front without me.  A couple times, a breakaway would form, and I chased a couple down myself.  I was very aggressive and rarely fell below 4th or 5th wheel.  Coming into the last lap, I just wanted to maintain a higher position in the field, then see what I could do in the sprint.  We flew around the final corner and all I remember is seeing Kristen Wentworth in the lead with a few girls between me and her, but I just kept going as hard as I could, hearing my cheer squad yelling for me at the finish (thank you!!), I kept hammering and caught up to and passed Kristen to take the win! I couldn’t believe I took the win, much less beat Kristen, and others in the sprint.

Helmlinger takes second in Burnham Super Crit

Jessica Helmlinger (Cafe Hollander), Valerie Brostrom (Bouledogue Tout Noir), Morgan Moon (Team Kenda)
After a few cruising laps the Women’s Open race started to heat up with a number of attacks that just didn’t stick. That brought it down to a tightly contested field sprint and a wonderful post up right on the line.

Way to start the season, Jess!

ToAD Womens Forum

Posted in General Info on February 24th, 2010 by atheriault

Jessica and Angela attended a Women’s Cycling forum last night at Wheel & Sprocket Delafield hosted by Tour of America’s Dairlyand and Bill Koch.

As many of you may know, ToAD has added a Womens 3/4 category for 2010. By doing so they hope to attract more women to the sport so that those who currently participate can race in larger fields, be more competitive and have more fun. And so that sponsors and race venues feel good about the additional time dedicated to the races – closing streets, managing traffic, security, spectators.

The main topic of discussion was about how to introduce more local women to competitive cycling by using what we know (and love) about the sport to help to educate and attract more riders.

Women from all types of athletic backgrounds were in attendance – recreational riders, triatheletes, mountain bikers, roadies, and even a local pro, Kristin Wentworth. We talked about what made riding and competing attractive and addressed some of the things women find intimidating about road racing; the things keeping them away from the sport.

- Fear of crashing; hurting themselves or others
- Unfamiliar with race etiquette or tactics
- Not thinking they’re “good enough” to be competitive; to even try
- No way to get experience before doing your first crit (especially if you live in the Milwaukee area)

The group was enthusiastic about finding ways to organize and promote women-only group rides and race clinics to get others more comfortable with the sport. For instance, Madison seems to have more learn-to-race clinics, but there aren’t many (any) in the Milwaukee area. Creating more opportunities to ride together to help others to learn etiquette and tactics that would make their race experience less intimidating and more enjoyable and build camaraderie among women in the sport.
In coming months ToAD is proposing that a womens-only group be formed (via Facebook, email or other means) so that rides and clinics can be communicated and promoted to women who may be interested.

This should be an exciting year for women’s cycling in Wisconsin.
